College Basketball Betting – A Look At Home Vs. Road ATS Records

Posted on 16. Feb, 2012 in Betting

Those who read a soccer blog know how important it is to have a home-pitch advantage, but college sports may be second to the beautiful game. That is why you’ll see teams run off streaks of 20 and 30 wins in a row at home, where the student section is often instrumental in pressuring the opposition as well as providing a spark for their team.

Some teams are just better on the road than they are on the road when it comes to college basketball betting: you can take a team like Tennessee, who is 11-2-1 ATS at home, but 4-6 ATS on the road, and that speaks to the leadership on the team. Davidson is similar to Tennessee in that they’re 9-2 ATS at home, but 4-9 ATS on the road and this is a regular occurrence in the college game (although players that are betting March Madness odds don’ t have to worry as much due to neutral sites).

It’s much tougher to find it the other way around: a team is a solid bet on the road, but they can’t quite cover at home. Loyola Marymount is 9-2 ATS away, but only 6-7 ATS at home, while Syracuse, one of the most talented teams in the nation and a favorite to win it all, is 9-9 ATS at home, but 6-2 ATS on the road.

Cases like Syracuse have to be treated different, as big-name teams will start the season with huge spreads as high as 20 to 25 points, and that means a 17-point win, while impressive, won’t cut it. You have to take that into account before making your sports betting picks.
