Syracuse Creeps Into Contention

Making a March Madness pick is an almost year-round business, believe it or not. Even though the best tourney in sports is months away, teams are already making impressions in the national rankings. One such team is Syracuse.
The Orange steamrolled a couple of pylons in their first two games before impressing with a win over No. 13 California and a dominating home victory over North Carolina last week in the 2K Sports Classic.
We can’t get too excited over a fairly meaningless mini-tournament but Syracuse was the only unranked team in the Northbet.com picks final four and rattled off two convincing wins. Against North Carolina, the Orange opened the second half with a 22-1 run. Wesley Johnson dropped 25 points on the Tar Heels and was named tournament MVP.
The key takeaway here has less to do with North Carolina – it’s way too early for people to hit the panic button – and more to do with Syracuse. While a loss any time soon would virtually erase the quick start, the way in which Syracuse won – throttling two ranked teams – is turning heads.
Come March, Syracuse could end up a No. 1 or at least a No. 2 seed if it plays its cards right. Stash the Orange a way as a possible 2010 March Madness pick down the road.
